SHUTTERNOTS:  Installing Shutternots

Installing decorative Shutternots is one of the easiest and quickest ways to add a new element to the exterior of your home, and without requiring advanced do-it-yourself skills or equipment.  Just follow these step-by-step instructions, and in no time at all, your house will have a whole new look with a set of brand new, beautiful exterior Shutternots!

The first step to installing Shutternots is to gather the tools you'll need for the job:

  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Pencil or Marker
  • Safety Goggles
  • Shutternots
  • Screws
  • Masonry anchors (for stone, brick or masonry walls)
  1. After you have assembled your tool-kit, it's time to attach the Shutternots.
  2. Hold the Shutternot in place beside the window.
  3. Mark the location of the holes in your Shutternot to your house.
  4. Drill a pre-hole to mark all the screw spots on the wall.
For Masonry, Stone and Brick Walls:
    Drill a 1/4" diameter, 2 3/4" deep hole.
If you are working with a masonry, stone or brick wall, insert masonry anchors into the holes.
For Vinyl Wood, Composition and Metal Siding:
Drill a 1/8" pilot hole at least 2 3/4" deep. Also for the best fit and to keep the Shutternot level use a 1/2" wood hole bit. Drill a hole through the siding down to the wood surface. This is the easiest way to keep your Shutternots level is to have the spacers nest directly to the wall.
  5. Now it is time for installation. Place the screw/bolt through the Shutternot and on the opposite side; place the spacers and flat washers (the flat washers will be against the Shutternot and the mounting wall, sandwiching the spacers.). The washers on the mounted wall will not be needed when drilling the 1/2" hole in the siding.
    Important Note:
It is important to make that you use the washer on the mounting wall this will help keep your Shutternot level. Put the Shutternot back into position and drive the screws or masonry anchors into the pilot holes. Stop when the screw head is just flush with the Shutternot surface. Next repeat the above procedure with bottom mounting holes.
Note: Depending on the surface, all spacers may not be needed to keep Shutternots level.
  6. Repeat for each remaining Shutternot.
  7. A paint pen has been provided to help conceal the hardware.
